ITINERARY
DAY 1: SAO JORGE CASTLE & ALFAMA
Your English-speaking chauffeur will welcome you at the airport. Hop into the fully-equipped Mercedes V-class minivan and let them drive you comfortably to your hotel. Lunch at leisure.
In the afternoon, meet your private, fully-licensed guide at the entrance of São Jorge Castle and follow them into this impenetrable fortress. The visit of the castle is followed by a walk downhill through the quaint narrow streets of Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon, stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), the oldest church in the city. The tour ends on the beautiful Praça do Comércio, once the location of the Royal Ribeira Palace until it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. After the tour, your chauffeur will bring you back to your hotel.
DAY 2: SINTRA, PENA PALACE & AZULEJOS
Meet your private, fully-licensed guide and your private chauffeur at your hotel and hop into a fully-equipped Mercedes V-Class minivan for an early morning departure to Sintra. After a 1-hour drive (approximately), you will reach the beautiful Pena Palace. An early morning departure is essential to beat the crowds. Let your guide take you through its narrow corridors and charming rooms as they tell you all about the history of this iconic monument. At the end of the visit, you will still have some time to enjoy the beautiful views and the lush gardens. On your way down, a stop is planned in Sintra so that your guide can show you the main highlights and curiosities of this charming town. At the end of the morning, the chauffeur will drive you back to your hotel in Lisbon.
In the afternoon, meet your private, experienced art teacher at the mosaic workshop. After a brief introduction on the history and technique of Azulejo in Portugal, each member of your family will be creating and decorating a ceramic sardine. This hands-on workshop is a great way to learn more about this traditional form of art. At the end of this workshop, the driver will take you back to your hotel.
DAY 3: THE TREASURES OF BELEM
Meet your private, fully-licensed guide and your private chauffeur at your hotel, hop into a fully-equipped Mercedes V-Class minivan, and make your way to the Jeronimos Monastery. Once inside, let your guide tell you all about the history of this architectural masterpiece and how it was used by monks back in the day. After a 15-minute walk, you will reach the tower of Belém, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the most iconic monument of Lisbon. Follow your guide as they take you inside the tower. No need to go inside this empty fortress as the most fascinating parts are outside. Listen to your guide as they tell you what it was built for and the stories behind the daring architecture and decoration. Lunch at leisure.
