Description

Azulejo is a form of Spanish and Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tilework. You will see them everywhere, and their vivid colors and patterns will immediately remind you of the warmth and joy of Portugal.

Meet your private, experienced art teacher in her art workshop located in the heart of Lisbon’s old center. After a very brief introduction on the history and technique of Azulejo in Portugal, each member of your family will be creating and decorating 1 ceramic sardine.

Follow the instruction of your art teacher and you will end up with a beautiful pair of traditional Portuguese azulejos once this 2-hour workshop is over.

And the best part is that you will be able to walk out of the workshop with your own creations, as the drying time is quite short!

This hands-on workshop is a great way to learn more about this traditional form of art.

Is this a private activity?
It sure is. Your family members will be the only ones in the art workshop, along with your private art teacher.
Do the parents participate?
Of course! Everyone will be creating their own pair of Azulejo sardines. Creating a family-bonding moment is what we want to achieve.
Is it suitable for kids under 6 years old?
Children under the age of 6 are welcome to participate in this workshop. However, azulejos ceramic creations need a bit of precision and coordination to create and decorate. Younger children will therefore need the help of their parents or siblings (as well as the experienced teacher), to make sure everyone is satisfied with the end-product.
Can I create an azulejo that is not a sardine pattern?
The idea of this workshop is to introduce you and your family to azulejos, which you will find in many of the sights of Portugal. The sardines have been picked because they are easy, iconic and perfect for children. For older children, you might want to ask the teacher if you can do something else. Please note that it takes a bit of time to dry, so you will have to consider that when choosing another motif.
Do I need to bring special material?
No! You do not need to bring anything as all the material is prepared for you.
Are we leaving the workshop with anything?
Of course, you will leave the workshop with your creations. We will make sure that these don’t become too bulky, so you can easily put them in your suitcase when going back home.
Will my teenage kids like the activity?
If they like arts & crafts, they will love this hands-on activity. It is fun, and interesting. With this hands-on workshop, the teenagers will realize how difficult it is to make an azulejo mosaic and how incredible the large azulejos in Portugal really are.
