Description

Back in the 17th century, there were no cameras. It was only fusain or paint. Rich people would have their portraits painted by famous painters, such as Rembrandt, Vermeer or Frans Hals. These artists are famous for their portraits, but also their self-portraits.

Meet your private, experienced art teacher and start dressing up as a 17th century wealthy Dutch family. Make sure you look nice as you are about to take a 17th century selfie! A photo will be taken of each member of your family (as well as a family photo).

The individual photos will serve as a basis for your self-portrait. With the help of your art teacher, start creating your self-portrait, following the basic steps and engage in a wonderful, family-bonding moment!

This Rembrandt self-portrait workshop is a great activity to combine with a visit to the Rijksmuseum (The treasures of the Rijksmuseum).

FAQ's

Is this a private activity?
It sure is. Your family members will be the only ones in the art workshop, along with your private art teacher.
Do the parents participate?
Of course! Everyone will be creating their own piece of artwork. That is the fun part!
Is it suitable for kids under 6 years old?
It is better to avoid bringing children younger than 6 as it is pretty difficult, and they might feel frustrated.
Can I paint something else than myself?
The idea of this workshop is to introduce you and your family to Rembrandt’s art and painting technique, as he is one of the most famous Dutch painters. You can paint another member of your family’s portrait, but it will not be something different than a portrait.
Do I need to bring special material?
No! You do not need to bring anything as all the material is prepared for you.
Are we leaving the workshop with anything?
Of course, you will leave the workshop with your creations. We will make sure that these do not become too bulky, so you can easily put them in your suitcase when coming back home.
Will my teenage kids like the activity?
If they like arts & crafts, they will love this hands-on activity. However, if they do not care much for art, then we recommend checking out some of our other activities.
